OekoPlus maincubes

maincubes, European provider of high-security and high-availability data centers, chooses the ÖkoPLUS seal of approval, thus consistently continuing its course towards sustainability. In connection with the acquisition of the demanding label, which is checked annually by TÜV-Rheinland, the data center operator supports hydroelectric power plant projects in India while aiming to become a climate neutral organization.

The negative effects of climate change caused by CO2 emissions can be observed worldwide and affect us all: from prolonged drought, storms and floods to the threat to entire ecosystems. The emission of CO2 must therefore be reduced in order to mitigate the consequences for the global climate and thus the impact on people and the environment as much as possible. maincubes has been actively involved in this topic for years and has been using state-of-the-art technologies and innovative approaches in its data centers from the very beginning in terms of construction and hardware used in order to save energy, conserve resources and ensure climate-neutral operation. However, the global challenge of climate change can only be successfully mastered if local efforts are complemented by parallel measures at the international level. By supporting eco and development projects abroad, maincubes helps to additionally reduce CO2 emissions in order to balance the global climate balance.

Promotion of hydropower plant in India
maincubes has committed itself to the goal of sustainability since its foundation in 2012. For example, in its two facilities near Frankfurt and Amsterdam, the company relies on energy-efficient construction concepts, state-of-the-art cooling and energy technology and immersion cooling, and is currently planning a third, completely CO2-neutral data center in the Rhine-Main region. With the climate protection certificates, maincubes now also supports the Malana hydroelectric power plant project in India and makes its company climate-neutral with the ÖkoPLUS quality label. The power plant on the Malana Nallah, a tributary of the Parbati River, makes a significant contribution to diversifying India’s electricity mix and helps to save around 275,532 tons of CO2 equivalent annually. In addition to the environmental benefits, the project above all improves the living conditions of the population in the surrounding area in several respects: among other things, a pharmacy and a school have been built to increase medical care and educational opportunities, further training opportunities have been created for the women of the surrounding communities to ensure more opportunities and equal rights, and water and sanitation services for the population have been improved through various measures.

"We are very happy to support the Malana hydropower plant and thus make a real sustainable contribution against climate change. At the same time, when selecting the project, it was important to us that the local people also benefit directly and that their lives improve immediately", says Albrecht Kraas, CTO of maincubes. "With this commitment and the ÖkoPlus seal, we can further optimize the area of sustainability and would like to motivate other companies in Europe to become more involved in environmental issues".

Top address for environmentally conscious colocation services
The two maincubes data centers FRA01 near Frankfurt and AMS01 near Amsterdam set standards in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability right from the start due to their modular design and technical equipment. In addition to effective cooling systems, green electricity and the use of insulating exterior facades, the colocation provider now enables its customers in the AMS01 data center to use immersion cooling. With the help of this process, in which hardware is immersed in a non-electrically conductive coolant, up to 80 percent of CO2 can be saved compared to conventional cooling methods. The company also relies on innovations such as its own digital platform secureexchange®, through which customers can network and exchange solutions, and is committed to the Open Compute Project with the only European OCP Experience Center. With the completely CO2-neutral FRA02 data center currently in the planning stage, maincubes aims to once again surpass the sustainability goals it has already achieved.
