SDGs

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The SDGs are 17 global goals set by the United Nations to address key social, economic, and environmental challenges. They guide organizations worldwide
in contributing to a sustainable and equitable future by 2030.

VSME

Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standards

The VSME is a simplified, voluntary sustainability reporting standard specifically designed for small and medium-sized enterprises, aligned with broader European reporting frameworks.

Climate Change

7 – Affordable and Clean Energy

Renewable Energy

We continuously improve the share of renewable energy in our energy mix.

EXAMPLE

With direct connections to local wind and solar farms, our planned next-level campus for AI and cloud-scale deployments mainHub Berlin is set to become a prime example of how to power the digital backbone of a sustainable future.

7 – Affordable and Clean Energy

Energy Efficiency

We consistently improve our energy efficiency to reduce resource use and emissions.

EXAMPLE

We’ve managed to improve the PUE at AMS01 from 2.02 to 1.66 from 2021 to 2023, and we’ve also cut electricity use per employee by about 21 % during that same time.

13 – Climate Action

Emissions REDUCTION

We are committed to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.

EXAMPLE

We reduced the weighted average Global Warming Potential (GWP) of our operational portfolio to 691 (target: 820) and cut our CO2 emissions by 34 % per employee from 2021 to 2023.

Circular Economy

9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Waste Heat Utilization

We proactively push the use of waste heat generated during server cooling to heat buildings in the local community and for other purposes in the heating network.

EXAMPLE

BER01’s waste heat is efficiently and directly fed into the adjacent Areal GoWest site to sustainably heat buildings in the surrounding community.

12 – Responsible Consumption and Production

Waste Reduction

We consistently reduce waste and optimize resource reuse across our operations.

EXAMPLE

We’ve achieved a remarkable 30 % reduction in waste generation per employee between 2023 and 2024, achieving an average of just 20 kg per employee.

Biodiversity and Ecosystems

15 – Life on Land

Biodiversity Protection

We actively enhance local biodiversity, reducing sealed surfaces and restoring ecological habitats.

EXAMPLE

Our BER02 campus is designed to meet LEED Gold standards and features a lifecycle CO₂ analysis. As part of the zoning plan, we are cleaning up and restoring a 90,000-square-meter brownfield site to create a functional ecological habitat.

Water and Marine Resources

12 – Responsible Consumption and Production

Water conservation

We operate our data centers with closed-loop systems that minimize ongoing water use, and we continue to advance water-saving infrastructure and practices.

EXAMPLE

We significantly reduced water use per employee by 7 % between 2023 and 2024.

7 – Affordable and Clean Energy

We actively drive the transition to renewable energy, signing substantial long-term power agreements and consistently enhancing the energy efficiency of our data centers. By optimizing power usage effectiveness (PUE) and systematically integrating green electricity, we make sustainable data operations the new standard.

9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Our data centers redefine sustainable infrastructure by combining continuous technological advancements like AI and sustainable design. We create resilient infrastructure that benefits local communities and ecosystems, while nourishing digital businesses to help them transform, collaborate and thrive.

12 – Responsible Consumption and Production

We minimize waste and resource consumption: systematic waste reduction, efficient resource reuse, and sustainable sourcing practices across our entire value chain. Lifecycle assessments and recycling strategies ensure responsible resource use and promote circular economy principles at every step.

13 – Climate Action

We actively combat climate change through targeted emission reductions, systematic carbon monitoring, and transparent EU Taxonomy-aligned reporting. Our holistic climate strategy not only ensures compliance but fundamentally contributes to global climate goals and a sustainable future.

15 – Life on Land

We protect and restore land-based ecosystems by reducing land degradation, limiting soil sealing, and embedding biodiversity measures
into site planning. This contributes to the long-term preservation of habitats, the regeneration of natural surfaces, and the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems.

Note on SDG Mapping

Although our activities contribute to a wide range of Sustainable Development Goals, we have deliberately chosen to focus on the SDGs that our current ESG efforts support most directly and measurably. This approach provides clarity and relevance for our stakeholders while maintaining the broader systemic impact of our work.
